They Love Most About MacGyver

Today MacGyver turns 40! To celebrate, we asked fans to share what they love most about the show. The outpouring of responses from all over the world was incredible — and we enjoyed reading each one. Here are 40 of our favorites:

  1. MacGyver makes the impossible seem possible.
    — Andy

  2. What do I love about MacGyver? Everything! He’s proof that sometimes you need to step back and see things in a different way, you can find a solution. He treats everyone fairly and always uses his head and heart. We should all try to be more like MacGyver.❤️”
    — Melinda K.

  3. A TV series that all ages can see to this day.
    — Salam A.

  4. I love his positive approach to life. His morals, helpfulness, and calmness in dangerous situations serve as a role model for me. He doesn’t chase women, doesn’t drink alcohol, eats healthy food, and always stays positive.
    — Vivien S.

  5. What I love most about MacGyver is how he modeled curiosity, calm, and creative problem-solving without relying on traditional weapons. His improvisational mindset encouraged learning and preparation, showing that knowledge and resourcefulness could defuse even the tensest situations. That same spirit lives on in MacGyver: The Musical, where the lead is cast from the audience and supported by a dynamic ensemble. It’s a brilliant way to celebrate ingenuity—making someone shine even without rehearsal. I’m fascinated by how it turns spontaneous participation into a showcase of teamwork and cleverness.”
    — Brant G.

  6. I bought the box set and have watched it with my family. I remember so many of the episodes from when I was a kid. Great family time. Creative, humourous, exciting, and my kids love it as much as I do. Thanks, Richard and team.
    — Deryck

  7. He always sees things from a different perspective❤️
    — Jeffery Z.

  8. It was a great show that I could sit and watch with my sons who were young at the time. We could talk about how MacGyver could figure things out with his brain instead of violence.
    — Patti P.

  9. Mac had that swagger before swagger was even a thing.”
    — Brian

  10. The original version I grew up with and it was a family time for watching tv. So there’s something about it that always makes me feel good and touches my heart. The reboot I was skeptical of but gave it a chance and I fell in love with the family aspect of it, since in the original even though he had friends, he was more of a one man band. Both taught me that no matter how hard life gets, improvise and make it better ❤️ I love Macgyver so much that I named my dog after him…”
    — MacGyver, Phoenix, Lilac

  11. Aside from RDA himself, which goes without saying, I’d say the fact that his greatest weapon is his brain, not a gun. Refreshingly different.”
    — Helen E.

  12. The sheer variety of stories, in addition to the “spy” type stuff.  The “Lost Treasure of Atlantis” TV movie where RDA teamed up with Brian Blessed remains a personal favorite.”
    — Michael R.

  13. Only one answer – Richard Dean Anderson.”
    — Cherie C.

  14. MacGyver is the representation of whom we should all strive to be. The base of MacGyver was to build people up, supporting its viewers to preserve respect to mankind with dignity and respect for one another. MacGyver achieved this through the realization in reproducing events of true potential consequences we’ve faced and are facing today through reality. When I watched the show as a kid I remember feeling a sense of true honest values a special connection to try and emulate as Richard Dean Anderson portrayed for years. MacGyver is very important to my daily life values.”
    — Andrew H.

  15. What I love about MacGyver? His improvisation, his cleverness, his courage, and above all, his big heart. He showed me that you should never give up; there’s always a solution. 🖇❤️🖇”
    — Katrin S.

  16. It was the fact that you can get yourself out of tight situations even in real life if you take a moment to look and understand.”
    — Jasper B.

  17. As a kid I would run to the TV when MacGyver came on and my favorite episodes had Jack Dalton and Murdoc in them. I would credit the show with planting a deep curiosity in my mind on how things work. That curiosity led to usable skills as an adult. Thanks Mac.”

  20. The best way to beat a problem is to make it work for you. MacGyver.❤️
    — Emily W.

  21. I was 8 years old when it started and watched every episode back then. I saved my allowance and bought a Swiss Army Knife just over a year later on my 10th birthday. I even had my hair in that Macgyver mullet. I bought the series on DVD years ago and watched it through from beginning to end(TV movies as well of course). I just restarted on Paramount+. About halfway done with season 1. MacGyver is truly the greatest TV show of all time.”
    — Rich R.

    — SpacestroChron

  30. My mother’s love of the ‘MacGyver’ series saw her connecting with other fans. Writing letters, collecting memorabilia, starting with others [in] a UK based fan club. ‘MacGyver’ to me, is very much a memory of the show, now connected with my late mum, Barbara, who I loved very much.”
    — WheelzWheeler

    — Thomas P.

  32. I loved how he explained how things would work! Maybe as an adult I would have found it tedious, but as a kid it really opened my mind to the fact that science is cool and useful for fighting crime. ^_^ I still can’t get over it was only 7 seasons. I wish it had been longer, it was mandatory watching for me back then.”
    — L.E. Simmons

  33. “What I loved about MacGyver was that he was a resourceful hero, MacGyver, who solved complex problems with everyday items, showcasing ingenuity and quick thinking. His ability to craft solutions using duct tape, paper clips, or whatever was at hand captivated me, blending science with creativity. The show’s mix of action, adventure, and clever problem-solving appealed to all of us kids growing up, while MacGyver’s relatable, non-violent approach and moral compass made him a unique TV icon. Its 1980s charm, engaging storylines, and emphasis on brains over brawn kept me hooked, inspiring a love for resourcefulness and unconventional heroism.”
    — NexGenGuy

  35. “He was so clever and never used a gun!”
    — Josh J.

  36. It was a great family show, using intelligence & ingenuity to solve problems instead of a ‘shoot ’em up’ type series. My favorite episode is ‘Slow Death’ from S1.”
